Summer Technical Product Manager Intern – Earth Index

Earth Genome - Remote - Summer 2026

About the Role

Earth Genome is looking for a technically fluent product manager intern to help shape the direction of Earth Index, our AI-powered platform for environmental mapping. You'll sit at the intersection of users, data, and engineering, helping us understand what our users need, define what we should build next, and measure whether it's working.

This role is equal parts strategic and hands-on. You'll talk to real users – environmental NGOs, investigative journalists, climate researchers – and translate what you learn into clear requirements and prioritized roadmap items. You'll also get into the details: defining evaluation metrics, designing user workflows, and writing specs that our engineering team can act on. You'll report to Earth Genome's Product and Operations Lead and collaborate daily with data scientists and engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Help manage and maintain the Earth Index product roadmap, working with engineering and leadership to prioritize features based on user impact, technical feasibility, and strategic alignment
  • Conduct user interviews and synthesize findings into actionable insights, identifying pain points, unmet needs, and opportunities across our partner and user base
  • Define and track product metrics, including evaluation frameworks that measure detection quality, user success, and platform performance over time
  • Write clear technical requirements and specifications for new features, translating user needs and research goals into scoped, buildable work
  • Collaborate with the data science team to understand technical constraints and possibilities, ensuring product decisions are grounded in what the technology can deliver
  • Contribute to product communications including internal documentation, release notes, and user-facing guides

What We're Looking For

  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a degree in a relevant field — MBA, computer science, or similar
  • Genuine interest in product management as a discipline; some coursework, project experience, or self-directed learning in PM fundamentals is a plus
  • Technical fluency – you don't need to write production code, but you should be comfortable reading documentation, understanding ML concepts at a high level, and having substantive conversations with engineers
  • Strong interviewing and listening skills; you're able to hear what users actually need, not just what they say they want
  • Clear, structured writing and communication – you'll be producing specs, reports, and documentation regularly
  • Comfort with ambiguity and competing priorities; you can make reasonable tradeoffs and explain your reasoning
  • Familiarity with tools like GitHub, Notion, Figma, or similar collaboration and project management tools is helpful
  • Interest in environmental issues, remote sensing, or the use of AI for social impact

Why Work With Us

  • Get real product management experience on a live product with actual users and partners – not a simulated exercise
  • Learn how product decisions are made in a small, fast-moving team where you'll see the full picture from user research through shipping
  • Work on technology at the frontier of AI and remote sensing, with direct applications to climate, conservation, and environmental justice
  • Have genuine influence over what gets built – in a team this size, a strong intern shapes the roadmap, not just the backlog
  • Build relationships across a network of NGOs, journalists, researchers, and climate coalitions who use what we make
