Summary

Reporting to the Director of Technology located in Barcelona, Spain, the Sr. Cloud Engineer will own the successful production deployment of projects using AWS services to solve Worldreader’s business challenges while helping to get our products and services to market rapidly. You will work closely with our engineering team to identify and implement the most optimal cloud-based solutions for the organization. You will define and document best practices and strategies regarding application deployment and infrastructure maintenance.

This is a full-time hybrid position based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, thought leadership, and mentorship to the development team to build cloud competencies.
  • Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful design.
  • Manage cloud environments in accordance with company security guidelines.
  • Develop and implement technical efforts to design, build, and deploy AWS applications at the direction of lead architects, including large-scale data processing, computationally intensive statistical modeling, and advanced analytics.
  • Participate in all aspects of the software development life cycle for AWS solutions, including planning, requirements, development, testing, and quality assurance.
  • Troubleshoot incidents, identify root causes, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures.
  • Educate teams on the implementation of new cloud-based initiatives, providing associated training as required.
  • Improve the existing CI/CD pipelines and build a modular and event-driven E2E test suite.
  • Assume some DevOps/Sys admin responsibilities; Automate and keep infrastructure up to date.

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficient in migrating or transforming legacy customer solutions to the Cloud.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to see and solve issues before they affect business productivity.
  • Familiarity with common enterprise services.
  • Working knowledge of software development tools and methodologies.
  • Ability to manage technical programs of medium-sized companies.
  • Able to adapt to new technologies, learn quickly, and manage high ambiguity.
  • Comfortable communicating across internal and external organizations.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field of study, or five (5)+ years of related work experience.
  • Three (3)+ years of experience in infrastructure, DevOps, or software engineering.
  • Three (3)+ years of design/implementation/consulting experience with enterprise applications.
  • Proficiency with running main AWS services: ECS, DynamoDB, Beanstalk, RDS, Redshift, Lambda, Code Pipeline, CloudWatch, VPC, and IAM.
  • Expertise in architecting/operating solutions built on AWS.
  • Experience with using API Gateway, CloudFormation, Bastion Servers, Glue, Pinpoint, Device Farm, SQS or other message queuing services, AWS Firewall, Security Hub, and others.

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Must work from the Kenya office up to twice per week.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
