VoteAmerica is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization founded in 2019 by a small team of election and technology experts, with the goal of driving record-shattering voter turnout by providing access to trusted election information, open platform technology, and education programs to support and empower the most vulnerable voters to navigate the path to exercising their vote. In 2020, we built our core set of open source tech tools to facilitate political engagement by providing voters with the trusted, timely, and accurate information needed to cast their ballots. The VoteAmerica theory of change is simple: Americans don’t need to be convinced to vote, they need to be able to vote. We know that Americans will vote at higher rates, and more consistently, as voting becomes more convenient. We reject outright the idea that low voter turnout is due to voter apathy and instead acknowledge that low voter turnout is a result of decades of intentional voter suppression that works specifically to reduce turnout among the most economically and socially marginalized Americans. If we want to increase voter turnout, we need to systematically identify and remove roadblocks to voting. VoteAmerica runs programs, builds technology, and conducts research to help people of color, young adults, and unmarried women vote.
