The Opportunity

The Director, Financial Planning & Analysis will play a critical role in guiding financial strategy, analyzing performance, and providing valuable insights to support informed decision-making.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the Vice President, Financial Planning & Analysis in developing a forward-looking, world class financial planning & analysis function at Urban.

  • Lead the FP&A function, oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes to support strategic planning and decision-making.

  • Manage, coach and mentor a team of financial analysts, fostering a culture of collaboration, growth, and innovation.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Divisions and Departments to develop financial targets, allocations and strategies for cost management and to evaluate investment opportunities.

  • Prepare comprehensive financial analyses, variance reports, and scenario planning to assess business performance and mitigate risks.

  • Prepare and deliver financial performance and forecast presentations to Department and Division leadership, Executive Leadership, and Board of Trustees.

  • Partner with Finance Business Systems to assess and make recommendations for improving the Urban's existing financial processes, data analytics systems and tools to increase the accuracy and efficiency of the department.

  • Collaboration with Grants and Contracts Office and Research Centers to provide financial information for award proposals, ensure financial compliance with award requirements and oversee all financial aspects of award applications and reporting.

  • Drive special projects and ad-hoc analyses.

Who You Are

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related business field. Master’s degree in related field is preferred

  • A minimum of 10+ years of FP&A related experience

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and strong analytic skills

  • Technology Proficiency:

  • Proficiency in financial planning and analysis tools and software.
  • Familiarity with accounting software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, experience with PBCS and JAMIS Prime is a plus
  • Knowledge of accounting, financial regulations and compliance requirements for nonprofit organizations.

  • Previous experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization preferred

  • Experience in award management and understanding of nonprofit financial reporting requirements for a diverse set of funding, including federal, philanthropic, corporate and individual.

  • Ability to understand complex business drivers, develop insights utilizing a data-driven approach and communicate succinctly to a range of different audiences

  • Proficiency in government contracting, contract vehicles, FAR cost principles, cost accounting standards, NICRA and indirect rates

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization and ability to influence at all levels

  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities and changes in the work environment, and an openness to try new approaches

The target salary range for this position is $110,700 – $150,000. Salary offered is commensurate with experience and considers internal equity. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Salaries are just one component of Urban Institute’s total compensation package. Urban is unique in that we offer 403(b) retirement plan participation immediately after you’re hired and a generous employer contribution after six months of service and 500 hours, with immediate vesting.
