Organizational Overview
Position
Founded in 2022, trubel&co (pronounced “trouble and co”) is a nonprofit that champions diverse youth to tackle complex societal challenges using data, design, and tech. We provide place-based workshops and summer programming across the US that bridge STEM with civic engagement.
We are looking for teaching assistants to support our second Mapping Justice: Hawaii cohort this summer. Mapping Justice is a project-based GIS and civics course that teaches students how to design geospatial tools for social change.
The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for working alongside the instructor and other TAs to guide students through a pre-designed six week GIS course. We are seeking a mission-aligned individual with previous instructional experience and a desire to mentor high schoolers.
This is an incredible opportunity to contribute to a new education start-up and support our mission to expand access to culturally-responsive technical education for underserved communities. See below for a detailed list of responsibilities.
Work Hours/Schedule:
Please note that all onboarding, training, meetings time and wrap-up tasks will be compensated. Some dates subject to shifts.
Responsibilities
Student Instruction (80%)
Program Administration (20%)
The current rate is fixed at $18/hr. The role is remote, local to Hawaii, part-time with 15 hours/week of classroom instruction, as an independent contractor. Instruction will be mostly virtual, with a 1-day in-person requirement at the end of the program. Candidate will report directly to the Lead Instructor.
What we’re looking for
In line with our commitment to equity, candidates do not need to have certain degrees or a particular number of years experience working full-time. What’s important is that you have/are:
Geospatial Expertise: You geek out about geographical approaches to solving problems. You feel comfortable implementing GIS, sharing its value proposition across a variety of applications, and teaching it to others. You have deep experience with ArcGIS Online; bonus points if you know additional geospatial and data visualization tools as well.
Experienced Classroom Facilitator: You have deep experience in creating learning environments, implementing curriculum, and managing grade 9-12 classrooms. You are excited to dive into aligning our work to Common Core, Social and Emotional Learning competencies, and Social Justice Standards, and you bring in best practices from having worked with students.
STEM Enthusiast: You have a strong STEM background, and have experience teaching GIS (other data analytics tools) at the high school or college level. You stay current with emerging trends and literature at the intersections of race, power, and technology. You are a champion for environmental and/or ecosystem sciences.
Social and Environmental Justice Advocate: Abolitionist pedagogies and liberatory design excite you, and you carry an unwavering commitment to justice, especially elevating the voices and experiences of marginalized and frontline communities. You’re passionate about how tech and innovation can unlock social change. You bring a deep commitment to anti-racist instructional practices and equity within STEM.
Skilled Communicator: You have used different instructional tools and methods to communicate complex, technical ideas to students with a variety of interests and different levels of experience with the content. You’re committed to our work and welcome brainstorming how our programs, curriculum, and content can be better designed to maximize impact.
Independent Operator: You can operate independently and make decisions thoughtfully, without supervision. You excel at time-management and appreciate hitting deadlines. You move quickly, but deliberately, and bring authenticity, humor, and vulnerability to the workplace. You have a hunger for feedback and growth, a willingness to ask for help, and a desire to take on new challenges.
