The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation (PJMF) is a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence and data science solutions to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. PJMF works in partnership with public, private, and social institutions to drive progress on our most pressing challenges, including digital health, climate change, broad digital access, and data maturity in the social sector.
The Director of Strategic Capital will be deeply committed to PJMF’s purpose to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all through the advancement of AI and data solutions. In this role, you will manage, mature, and interweave a grantmaking portfolio that aims to advance progress across a series of focus areas at the intersection of AI and social impact. While the focus areas may change and shift over time, the current list includes: Shape a Human-Centered, Digitally-Enabled Society, Promote Health Equity Through Digital Technology, Preserve a Liveable Planet, Sustain the Media and Their Audiences in the Age of AI, Promote Tech-Enabled Crisis-Readiness, Cultivate AI-Centric Digital Fluency, and Build New Power Through Data & Technology. The position will report to the VP of Strategy & Innovation.

How you will make an impact:

  • Oversee the onboarding, training, and ongoing work of a team of Strategy Analysts and/or Strategists who will conduct field sensing research, source new grant partners, evaluate specific projects for funding, manage grant partner relationships, and support the Foundation’s external thought leadership efforts.
  • Work collaboratively across the Strategy & Innovation team to identify new opportunities for the Foundation to add value to its partners and consult on the design of new program offerings.
  • Lead multiple strategy projects, including scoping and structuring complex questions, identifying issues and formulating hypotheses, conducting analysis, synthesizing findings in internally and externally facing collateral, and presenting work and recommendations to internal leadership.
  • Lead the development and facilitation of high-impact presentations for PJMF’s leadership, team, and other high-priority audiences.
  • Oversee the development of program area strategies and be accountable for building a portfolio of hypothesis-aligned grants that align with annual budget targets.
  • Develop and execute a portfolio management approach that fosters grant stewardship and provide feedback and advisory support on the development and management of major grants.
  • Connect program strategies with philanthropic and tech industry insights to provide critical linkages and support decision-making around resource allocation.
  • Serve as a thought leader on the role of AI as a tool to advance prosocial outcomes, including through writing and public engagement (e.g., representing PJMF at conferences and workshops; participating in external advisory groups, where aligned).

What you will need to succeed:

  • Experience: 7+ years of demonstrated experience across the private, public, and social sectors with broad exposure to technology and social impact portfolios. Specific experience in one or more of the Foundation’s current grantmaking focus areas is preferred but not required.
  • Consummate people leader: Keen interest in leading a high-performing team and moving a team to action through radically candid feedback, coaching, and development.
  • Executive presence: Strong presentation skills and experience facilitating meetings and decision making among senior leaders
  • Relationship and management focus: Track record of building strong relationships and working collaboratively and effectively with people at all levels in an organization, including senior leadership. Must have a track record of effectively managing, inspiring, and coaching high-performing team members
  • Communication: Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a range of audiences
  • Capabilities: Strong analytical and time management skills; ability to organize and present information to facilitate quick decision-making, ability to anticipate and proactively address needs
  • Solutions-driven: Proven ability to take charge of structuring complex – and frequently ambiguous – projects and questions, generating hypotheses, identifying information sources, gathering and interpreting data, executing analyses, developing a coherent point of view, and presenting findings to team members and stakeholders in a manner that enables effective decision making
  • Growth mindset: Creative, naturally curious, and willing to take intellectual risks
  • 100% Remote: Desire to work remotely, but not alone - with mature, socially minded professionals
  • Passion/Cultural Alignment: Maintain genuine enthusiasm for building a better future in the digital era and ensure that the benefits of technological advancement are shared by all.
  • Work eligibility: Applicants must be based in the U.S. and authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

What we offer:

  • Competitive Salary: We anticipate the starting salary range for this role to be $170,000 - $205,000
  • Health Coverage: Foundation-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees, spouses/domestic partners, and dependents. HSA/FSA plans, life insurance, and short- and long-term disability coverage
  • Long-term Rewards: 401(k) retirement plan with generous matching up to 6% of annual pay, plus an additional discretionary match at the end of year
  • Flexible PTO: Unlimited paid time off, which allows team members to take the time they need for vacation or illness so they can return to work able to contribute fully to our mission. The foundation recognizes 11 paid national holidays per year and may also announce closure for local, regional, or state holidays
  • Remote Work Environment: Ability to work 100% remotely, but not alone - with mature, socially minded professionals
  • Wellness Support: Access to Ginger, Gympass, Headspace, and SmartSpend Plus, along with financial well-being providers
  • Parental Leave: Up to 6 months of gender-neutral paid leave for parents and caregivers when they have a new addition to their families
  • Learning Reimbursements: Foundation policy encouraging employees to explore development opportunities such as peer learning, internal trainings, and external activities; savings on student loans (available via insurance provider)
  • Philanthropic Gift Matching: opportunity for team members to support vulnerable communities, reflecting PJMF’s commitment to social impact
