The Last Mile, a San Francisco, CA-based non-profit, is the first prison program in the U.S. to provide in-prison software engineering training. Our mission is to provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for justice-involved individuals through education and technology training. The Engineering Department manages and supports technical operations across The Last Mile organization, including internal tooling and our Platform as a Service (PaaS), which operates in prisons nationwide. Daily engagements range from fielding ad-hoc requests supporting remote facilities to proactively monitoring our PaaS infrastructure and deployments using our automation frameworks. This is a highly collaborative role with the opportunity to engage with an extensive range of systems and technologies.
This position reports to the VP of Engineering and is a remote-based role, but requires some travel to our Roseville, CA office and facilities within the Bay Area. The salary range is based on the employee's geographic location and experience.
Responsibilities
- The Network Automation Engineer is engaged with all aspects of networking technology for The Last Mile, including internal infrastructure, remote staff connectivity, and networks supporting the program's services. This includes involvement in the selection process for hardware, cabling, vendors, tooling, authentication, and network platforms in support of organizational requirements and designing their implementation, all the way through deployment, monitoring, managing operational support, and maintenance. This role is also responsible for managing and supporting our zero-trust network infrastructure and ensuring the organization maintains suitable controls and audit mechanisms.
- Evaluate organizational network needs and priorities, develop and enhance existing technical infrastructure to meet future organizational needs
- Prioritize efforts, support escalations, and drive resolutions promptly
- Monitor network infrastructure and respond to alerting
- Troubleshoot availability, security, and performance issues, including network traffic identification
- Maintain deployment lifecycle with hardware refreshes and automated deployment of rolling updates
- Field and develop organization requirements and solutions which maintain our security posture and performance needs.
- Participate in peer review of solution designs, incorporating feedback and providing guidance to other team members
Essential Skills:
- A passion for solving challenges and empowering people through technology
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong understanding of IP networking, switching, routing, VLANs, VPN, Firewalls, Routers, Wifi, DNS, DHCP, SSH, HTTP(S), IPsec, certificates, and 802.1x protocols, designs, configuration, best practices, troubleshooting, performance, and security
- Experience with Linux system administration including bash
- Strong experience with Palo Alto Networking technology including Panorama to manage remote devices and networks
- Experience performing network deployments and configuring instances using Terraform
- 4+ years of enterprise networking experience as a network admin, devops engineer, or technical expert
- A strong understanding of information security fundamentals, including risk assessment, and management
- A strong understanding of computer hardware and peripherals
- Support and maintenance of ticket, and git driven workflows
Nice to Have:
- Management of layered GCP projects and shared VPC’s through Terraform
- Remotely supporting macOS, and ChromeOS environments
- Integration, extension and support of OAuth + SAML authentication + authorization
- Google Workspace administration of devices and users
