Having a credit score is often the first step towards financial inclusion and for gaining access to formal financial institutions like banks. In many developed countries, large credit bureaus provide lenders with credit scores based primarily on loan applicants past credit history and repayment data. This presents a large challenge in Myanmar, where a credit bureau has yet to be established and where nearly 95% of Myanmar people currently find themselves excluded from the mainstream banking system. We therefore started ScoreStarter as a way for financially excluded people in Myanmar to build up credit history and an alternative credit score that we call the Starter Score that can then be used to qualify for essential financial products.
