Company Overview: Reboot Rx is a nonprofit startup focused on advancing affordable cancer treatments by repurposing FDA-approved generic drugs (rebootrx.org). We synthesize and evaluate published clinical evidence on repurposed generic drugs for cancer in consultation with clinical experts, advance new clinical research through strategic partnerships, and develop and disseminate evidence-based information for clinicians, health systems, and other healthcare decision-makers.

Position description: The Lead AI Engineer serves as a strategic technology leader and hands-on contributor overseeing our data science and technology initiatives. This individual focuses on leveraging AI and ML to support scientific discovery and drive innovation, building on our success with prostate cancer so patients with other cancer types can benefit from repurposed therapies. This is a senior role for someone who still loves to code: you will architect, build, deploy, and run the AI systems at the core of our mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Partner closely with biomedical scientists and other stakeholders to deeply understand their workflows and unmet needs, then design and build innovative solutions that solve their real problems and advance the science.
  • Help shape and execute the technical strategy and roadmap for our data and AI platform.
  • Design, build, deploy, and run software end-to-end: full-stack web applications (React front ends, Python API back ends), cloud infrastructure, and data pipelines.
  • Build agentic AI systems: multi-agent LLM pipelines with tool use, retrieval-augmented generation, and guardrails that make outputs trustworthy (citation verification, hallucination mitigation, human-in-the-loop review).
  • Architect and run cloud-native infrastructure on AWS (e.g., Bedrock, Step Functions, ECS/Fargate, Lambda, Aurora/PostgreSQL, S3, OpenSearch) as infrastructure-as-code, with cost-awareness, security, and observability at scale.
  • Communicate technical work clearly to non-technical audiences, and co-author scientific publications with collaborators where appropriate.
  • Wear multiple hats and provide light IT general support when needed.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a small technical team.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data science, or quantitative field (advanced degree preferred).
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, preferably at a startup or managing small engineering teams.
  • Demonstrable production experience building LLM applications including multi-agent orchestration, RAG, tool/function calling, prompt engineering, and evals and guardrails.
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies (preferably AWS).
  • Full stack experience: proficient in Python and modern JavaScript/TypeScript + React, with API frameworks (FastAPI/Flask), containerization (Docker), and relational databases (PostgreSQL).
  • Understanding of healthcare ecosystem with exposure to clinical data and systems.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to communicate technical information to a wide audience.
  • Self-directed and proactive, with the ability to identify priorities, take ownership, and drive work forward independently in a dynamic environment.
  • Enthusiasm for Reboot Rx’s mission to improve outcomes for cancer patients.

Details: This is a remote, full-time role. While Reboot Rx operates during typical Eastern Time work hours, the individual can live anywhere within the U.S. Benefits include healthcare reimbursement, an accommodating work schedule, unlimited paid time off (PTO) plus 14 company-wide holidays, short- and long-term disability insurance, and an employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan with Roth options. Reboot Rx is an equal opportunity employer. All candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.

The Reboot Rx story: Founded in 2020, Reboot Rx is driven by a mission to help cancer patients worldwide have access to effective and affordable treatments that help them live longer and better lives.
