Company overview: Reboot Rx is the Boston-based nonprofit startup dedicated to fast-tracking the development of affordable cancer treatments using FDA-approved generic drugs (rebootrx.org). Our proprietary AI technology quickly sifts through large amounts of data to help us find the most promising generic drugs to repurpose for cancer. By focusing on low-cost drugs that already have significant evidence from clinical trials for cancer treatment, we can impact the lives of more patients faster than anyone else. We advance our top drugs into the standard of care through innovative partnerships and policy development. Our first repurposed generic drug is for prostate cancer, and we are now scaling our approach to other cancer types.

Position description: We are seeking a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to lead Reboot Rx’s research initiatives and oversee three functional areas:

  • Clinical Development - i) Preparing briefing books and convening oncology experts to weigh in on the efficacy and safety data for our top generic drug candidates. ii) Partnering with groups like the Veterans Health Administration to generate new real-world evidence and/or run larger randomized controlled trials when needed. iii) Submitting recommendations to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) to add the drugs to clinical guidelines as the first step toward changing the standard of care for patients.
  • Biomedical Science - Validating the output of our AI technology.
  • Technology - Enhancing our AI technology to identify the most promising drug repurposing candidates faster.

The CSO will be a key member of the leadership team reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a thought partner to help develop research priorities and strategy. The individual will collaborate with the Implementation team and have additional support from Reboot Rx’s Board of Directors and advisors. The CSO will initially manage six team members across the three functional areas, with growth expected in the near term. The individual will develop strategy, build highly collaborative research teams, and ensure the successful completion of deliverables. The individual should be particularly excited to join a small, mission-driven nonprofit startup and will be expected to be a hands-on contributor when needed (e.g., to prepare slide decks and reports). This role includes significant opportunities for interactions with key opinion leaders and influential changemakers, and the ability to shape the trajectory of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Set the strategic direction for our drug portfolio, including overseeing the prioritization of drug candidates and identifying opportunities to expand our impact.
  • Manage the day-to-day work of our clinical, biomedical, and technology teams, with responsibility for timelines and deliverables.
  • Recruit and hire staff, ensure close collaboration and effective communication between team members, and support their professional development.
  • Establish and manage relationships with oncologists, clinical researchers, patient advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders to advance our drug repurposing candidates.
  • Play a key role in communicating our scientific progress externally and actively seek opportunities to share developments through presentations at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Support the CEO as needed, including communicating about research progress and plans to potential donors for fundraising and to Reboot Rx’s Board of Directors.

Qualifications:

*If your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway if you meet most of these requirements.*

  • MD or PhD in biomedical sciences or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in biomedical research and drug development.
  • Experience in a senior leadership role and successfully building and managing research teams in a drug development organization.
  • Knowledge of medical oncology, clinical trial design, and how the standard of care for cancer treatment is established and evolves with new treatment options.
  • Strong ability to assess scientific and clinical evidence in the oncology setting, and experience in pharma or biotech in selecting and validating drug candidates.
  • Basic knowledge of how AI and machine learning can accelerate drug development.
  • Experience engaging with key opinion leaders and clearly communicating about clinical data.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships internally and externally to the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for a diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
  • Seasoned problem solver with an aptitude in decision-making.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management, written communication, and public speaking skills with acute attention to detail.
  • Strong team player and interpersonal skills with an open mind and positive attitude.
  • Experience or keen interest in working at an innovative startup with the flexibility and adaptability needed to achieve the organization’s goals.
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to Reboot Rx’s mission, and a strong interest in being an advocate for generic drug repurposing.

Details: This is a remote, full-time role. While Reboot Rx operates during typical Eastern Time work hours, the individual can live anywhere within the U.S. Benefits include healthcare reimbursement, an accommodating work schedule, unlimited paid time off (PTO) plus 14 company-wide holidays, and an employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan with Roth options. Reboot Rx is an equal opportunity employer. All candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.; unfortunately, we cannot provide visa sponsorship now or in the future. Reboot Rx uses E-Verify to confirm work eligibility for all new employees.

The Reboot Rx story: Founded in 2020, Reboot Rx is driven by a mission to help cancer patients worldwide have access to effective and affordable treatments that help them live longer and better lives. Many team members have been personally affected by cancer, which motivates the work we do each day. As a nonprofit funded by philanthropy, we can pursue the drugs with the greatest potential impact for patients, without needing a substantial financial return, and we can access partners and data that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

We are a small organization with big ambitions, and we have achieved a lot in a short time thanks to numerous collaborations with prominent stakeholders. Our organization values patient-driven impact, scientific rigor, kindness and respect, open-mindedness and flexibility, and putting health and family first. We are a positive and supportive team committed to helping all staff develop and grow.
