Our Roots

About Our Roots: Our vision at Our Roots is to build legacies of generational mental wellness by and with communities of color impacted by poverty. We do this by virtually connecting pregnant and postpartum communities to peer coaches to promote healing and prevent anxiety and depression. Our 501(c)(3) non-profit is supercharged by philanthropic foundations and individual donors who believe in our mission.

About the Role: Peer coaches are the backbone of Our Roots. We are currently hiring up to two peer coaches, one peer coach who speaks English and Spanish fluently, and another peer coach who fluently speaks English. You share lived experiences with our communities including parenthood, culture, race, ethnicity, and more, and you will utilize your superpowers to co-create radical shifts in mental wellness for our mamas, birthing parents, and generations to come.

Your role is to offer loving, culturally-reverent, and responsive peer support through weekly virtual check-ins with our communities. At the same time, strong organizational skills and detail-orientation are key as you document and uplift the experiences of our communities. This role is in service of ensuring our mamas and birthing parents experience joy during this often challenging and transformative time in their lives, and of ensuring their children thrive. Our Roots will offer peer coaches opportunities for ongoing learning and growth including weekly supervisory check-ins, weekly spaces for peer-to-peer learning, and ongoing training.

We are looking for someone who can work approximately 10 - 20 hours a week. Your hours will be based on parent engagement, so you must be comfortable with some fluctuation in your hours. This job is fully remote. We do ask for some flexibility to work evenings or on weekends if needed to meet the scheduling needs of our communities.

Ideally, you’re so energized by this role that you’ll grow into a larger role in which you also support Our Roots in improving our service offerings through community organizing and collaboration with our mamas and birthing parents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer weekly, virtual coaching check-ins with our mamas and birthing parents

    • Build a strong relationship and trust with parent

    • Draw from your lived experience, our resource database, and your cultural practices to build tools for healing and wellbeing with parent

    • Incorporate the cultural and birthing practices of the parents you’re working into your check-ins without judgment

    • Organize check-in based on content and timing guidelines offered in onboarding and ongoing training

    • Balance offering transformational support with timing guidelines

  • Capture the quantitative and qualitative experience of our communities through note-taking during each session, and depression and anxiety screenings in a way that’s supportive, not extractive

  • Proactively manage complex needs of your parents by referring them to resources, adding resources to database as needed, and leaning on team when you need support

  • Take active part in 1:1 and team meetings to share and receive direct and nurturing feedback, to share learnings and offer support to other coaches, and develop and apply new skills to improve outcomes for our communities

  • Record select coaching check-ins weekly as part of ongoing improvement of the quality of our service

  • Translate messages from English to Spanish and vice versa as needed (if you are applying for the English and Spanish coaching role)

  • Participate in special projects that support our small, and growing non-profit

About You:

  • You have lived experience around the issues we are trying to eliminate and you have at least 2 years of experience supporting communities of color impacted by poverty around mental wellness, pregnancy and postpartum, or parenthood

  • You are energized about building relationships virtually

  • You have a penchant for learning about and using new tools and technologies

  • You hold deep empathy and are an active listener

  • You feel comfortable not having all the answers, yet you’re eager to hold space and explore solutions

  • You are meticulous, organized, and detail oriented making it easy for you to manage and address the complex needs of several mamas and birthing parents at one time

  • You are persistent and have the self-motivation to find solutions where others see challenges

  • We are looking for one peer coach who is fluent in oral and written English and another who is fluent in oral and written English and Spanish

  • Bonus: You’re based in Oakland, Hayward, or the East Bay in California

Mindset + Values:

  • You feel a calling to our vision around offering transformational support that uplifts the cultures of our communities

  • You will go the extra mile to co-create tools that nurture and bring joy to mamas

  • You love, embrace and want to elevate different cultural practices and assets that fall outside of our “Western norms”

  • You’re persistent and communicative in the face of complexity and challenges, and proactively come up with solutions that can be tested to resolve these challenges

  • You want to learn and grow with us

  • You can be flexible and enjoy leaning into the ambiguity of a growing non-profit

  • You are comfortable providing and receiving direct and nurturing feedback, and acting on it, even when it is challenging

  • You’re committed to working on your own mental wellness including setting boundaries with those you are caring for

Interview Rounds & Timeline:

We plan to hold our first round of interviews, behavioral interviews, in early March, and our second round of interviews, role plays, in mid to late March. We aim to onboard new peer support coaches by the beginning of April. This timeline is approximate, and may be shifted.
