Position Overview

Do you want to use your editorial judgment and knowledge of photography to help tell groundbreaking stories about organized crime and corruption? This is the job for you.

As a driven, decisive and self-motivated Photo Editor, you’ll curate and source images for OCCRP’s stories, commission photographers, and manage our digital photo library. This role is a critical point of communication between the core editorial team, the web team, and journalists across the globe.

Job Description

  • Act as a photography champion, promoting great content and best practices in image usage across OCCRP.
  • Work with OCCRP’s Core Editorial Team on a daily basis to ensure every story uses photography as effectively as possible.
  • Manage OCCRP’s digital photo library, ensuring easy and swift access to relevant visual content for teams across the organization.
  • Edit large photo sets so that the best content is available in our digital library.
  • Identify gaps in photo content and commission freelance photographers accordingly.
  • Continually promote and set a high standard for ethical and legal image use across OCCRP and our partner organizations.
  • Train reporters in-the-field in photography, best practices, and image use.
  • Work with the Products Team to ensure they have access to images they need for promoting OCCRP’s work to a wide audience.
  • Periodically update OCCRP’s image-use policy, ensuring that journalists globally are using photography in line with the policy.

Person Specifications

  • Experience as a Photo Editor, or working with photography in a media organization.
  • A proven eye for outstanding photography, and the ability to match the strongest imagery with brand and messaging requirements
  • Passionate about photojournalism, with a depth of both technical and theoretical knowledge
  • Awareness of current trends in photography and image making
  • Experience working on a photo library/digital asset management system
  • Knowledge of legalities in relation to image licensing, data protection, child protection
  • Good written English, and the ability to write clear briefs
  • Good IT skills including practical use of Project Management tools (Asana), Adobe creative suite and other photographic software
  • Excellent time-management
  • Excellent organizational abilities with the ability to keep track of numerous tasks at once while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, with experience working cross culturally and across various time zones.
  • Sound experience of working with a range of stakeholders and developing relationships internally and externally.
  • Understanding of ethical considerations in content gathering in the media sector.
  • An interest in investigative journalism and global affairs.
