Location: This is a full-time position located in Augusta. This position allows for partial telework with manager approval.

The Maine CDC is seeking a State Nuclear Safety Inspector (22 MRS §663-A) to provide expert oversight of nuclear and radiological activities. This position, within the Division of Environmental and Community Health (DECH), serves as the subject matter expert on nuclear and radiological safety and compliance. In accordance with Radiation Protection Act (22 MRS Ch. 160), you are responsible for the protection of the public health and safety through effective regulation of radioactive source possession, use, and disposal practices, as well as emergency response planning procedures to include the coordination of exercises and drills with federal, state, and regional partners.


You will be a senior-level member of DECH leadership team, which includes the division director along with managers for Health Inspection, Radiation Control, Drinking Water and Environmental Health Programs and will serve as an advisor to public health officials, policymakers, legislative committees, and the public. You are also responsible for administering and enforcing applicable laws, regulations, legislation, finances, training, records retention, and continuous quality improvement.

Core Responsibilities:

As the State Nuclear Safety Inspector, your core responsibilities will include:

• Serving as an on-site nuclear safety inspector for facilities and for the storage and transportation of high level and low level nuclear waste, with regular fieldwork in nuclear power plants, manufacturing facilities, construction sites, and outdoor environmental monitoring locations.
• Providing superior customer service and effectively communicating professional guidance and expertise regarding significant environmental health and safety issues to Maine CDC divisions, programs, and the public.
• Making recommendations for policy development and improvements for the protection of public health from environmental exposures.
• Inspecting facilities and operations for compliance with safety standards and regulations and providing direction for preventative measures and enforcement actions.
• Communicating safety violations to facilities operators.
• Writing timely and concise technical reports.
• Providing consultation and active participation in working groups and legislative committees on nuclear safety-related issues, including spent fuel oversight, radiological dose calculations, radioactive and nuclear waste storage and transportation, and emergency response planning. National travel is required.
• Overseeing the State’s Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program (REMP) which, at times, requires extensive driving and hiking in hazardous environments, including during inclement weather.
• Managing program budgets and revenue sources including federal grants.
• Creating, implementing, reviewing, maintaining, and documenting rigorous onboarding, safety, and annual refresher training schedule to the Radiation Control Program.
• Preparing for and providing presentations and testimony, as well as compiling and distributing activities reports to the legislature relating to the Maine Yankee Facility and national nuclear waste issues.
• Constructing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and providing general guidance and support for the Radiation Control Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on nuclear, mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering and have at least 4 years’ experience in nuclear operations. Preference will be given to candidates knowledgeable in the field of commercial nuclear power production.

Preferred candidates will also have:
• Knowledge and experience with radiological emergency response.
• Knowledge and experience in radiological dose calculation, modeling, and evaluation.
• Working knowledge of radiation survey instruments, techniques, and environmental sampling.
• Ability to work with managers and staff to identify training needs for emergency response and planning.
