ABOUT LOCAL CONTEXTS

Local Contexts (localcontexts.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Indigenous data sovereignty and cultural heritage management. Through innovative digital tools, Local Contexts empowers Indigenous communities to control and manage their intellectual and cultural properties. We are committed to upholding Indigenous rights and promoting ethical stewardship of cultural resources.

THE ROLE

As the Local Contexts Communications and Marketing Lead, you will be responsible for working across our organization to coordinate a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy that ensures consistent messaging that aligns with Local Contexts vision, mission and values, translating this into a goal-oriented plan, implementing the plan, and reporting on results. You will be creating and managing content across our social media platforms, website, and email communications to promote our events, raise awareness of our mission and activities, and support our Member, Subscriber, and Service Provider programs. You will be developing and executing media campaigns, tracking engagement, and evolving our approach in collaboration with our team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this role, you will be heading up our brand positioning as an organization dedicated to Indigenous data sovereignty and cultural heritage management. In addition to supporting our team, you will also be collaborating with other organizations, advocacy groups, and influencers to amplify Local Contexts messages.

Communication and Marketing Plan:

Enhance awareness of Local Contexts and drive our impact through a communications and marketing strategy, action plan, measurable goals, and analytics. Develop key messages and ensure all communications reflect Local Contexts vision, mission, values, and strategic priorities. Develop and manage campaign budgets and optimize performance to achieve marketing goals.

Content Creation:

Create and deploy mission-aligned engaging and informative content for our social media platforms, website, and email campaigns. Coordinate with internal and external teams to gather information and media for content creation. Assist the team in maintaining consistent branding and messaging on all content, including presentations, event promotion, website, and educational materials.

Social Media and Digital Marketing Campaigns and Management:

Manage and grow our social media presence across multiple platforms, creating a content calendar that utilizes organic and paid campaign strategies. Plan, schedule, and execute digital media campaigns to increase awareness and engagement with our mission and activities. Utilize analytics to track performance and improve content strategies. Amplify and engage with followers and aligned accounts on social media channels.

Email Communication:

Develop and manage email marketing campaigns, including newsletters and targeted emails. Create compelling email content that drives engagement and subscriptions.

SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

Compelling writer, visual, and verbal communicator. Creative drive to generate innovative content ideas. Detail-oriented and committed to high-quality work. Strategic thinker with experience developing and executing data- and people-driven plans. Project manager who excels at taking initiative, managing multiple projects simultaneously, working with others, and setting and meeting realistic deadlines. Analytical approach to measuring and optimizing campaign performance. Collaborative and team-oriented mindset. Knowledge of SEM, SEO, PPC, and digital advertising best practices. Passion and familiarity for Indigenous rights, data sovereignty, cultural heritage preservation, and/or Local Contexts, or willingness to learn. Willingness to be flexible in a fully distributed and international environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

At least 3 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or a similar role. Strong familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram), marketing campaigns, and/or other forms of digital media and associated best practices and analytics. Experience working with non-profit organizations or advocacy groups. Proficiency in graphic design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva); familiarity with video editing a plus. Proficiency in website content management systems (e.g., WordPress), familiarity with HTML/CSS a plus Proficiency in data management and analytics tools (e.g., SalesForce, Google Analytics, Hootsuite). Familiarity with team communication and task management platforms (e.g., Slack, ClickUp, Zammad)

We operate as a fully virtual-office organization and our remote team works cohesively across the globe. The workweek is generally Monday through Friday. Employees negotiate standard hours with their manager, ensuring at least 3 hours of overlap.

We prioritize each other’s health and wellness, and operate with respect for each other’s time and contributions. We provide medical benefits and a retirement plan. In addition, we utilize a flexible-time-off policy. Rather than allocating employees separate amounts of time off for sick, vacation and personal days, we provide an unlimited time off to give employees greater flexibility to meet their personal needs, subject to managerial approval.
