Young people reach out to Kids Help Phone’s professional counselors and trained volunteers from every corner of the country via phone, Live Chat and texting, and benefit from their database of local youth-serving programs. Kids Help Phone’s website is a widely recognized model of youth-focused design, offering therapeutic tools, games, information, and counseling.

Position Overview:

Reporting into our Executive Director, Finance & Operations, the Senior Financial Accountant at Kids Help Phone will play a crucial role in maintaining the financial health of the organization. This position involves the preparation of financial reports, budgeting, and compliance processes, ensuring accuracy and transparency in financial practices. The Senior Financial Accountant will work to support the finance team as a whole to effectively enhance our mission of providing support to young people across Canada.

What You Will Contribute:

  • Responsible for full cycle accounting, this includes the following:

- Prepare monthly reconciliation of all Balance Sheet accounts

- Post and approve journals

- Review and investigate any variances in monthly financial statements and data (include

whether

transactions are charged to the correct fund)

- Prepare Financial Edge to Raisers Edge reconciliation monthly

- Assist with preparation of monthly expense and salary allocation journals

- Maintenance of Fixed Asset Register and calculating depreciation

- Recording monthly bank and credit card service fees (from donation transactions)

  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
  • Month end and year end closing procedures
  • Record and reconcile intercompany funds
  • Evaluating and monitoring accounting and internal control systems
  • Support the maintenance of accounting software and supporting database including maintenance and upgrades including maintenance of G/L, account structure, account mapping and financial software
  • Support continuous improvements, best practices, system improvements and optimization
  • Support to develop business performance metrics
  • Support regulatory reporting and compliance (annual T3010)
  • Prepare PSB rebate return and monthly self-assessed tax
  • Support external audit (annual)
  • Prepare accounting for investments and fund management
  • Financial reporting
  • Assist with preparation of T4A for contractors (annual)
  • Oversee accounts payable function and manage Accounts Payable clerk
  • Oversee AP inbox is being managed in a timely manner and responses are timely
  • AP subledger reconciliation to the general ledger and monitoring
  • Review set up of new vendors
  • Review Corporate Mastercard reconciliations
  • AP automation system champion (investigate any connection issues, main contact for the tool)
  • Oversee weekly payment run (EFT and cheque)
  • Support financial planning processes (quarterly forecast and annual budget)
  • Support cash flow planning and forecasting
  • Support accounting manager with grant reporting
  • Business partnering
  • Review P&L actuals to budget or other key KPIs
  • Develop monthly internal management reports for stakeholders (marketing and fundraising)

What You Will Need:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field such as Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, etc.
  • Professional accounting designation or working towards accounting designation required
  • 3-5 years of full cycle accounting/relevant experience – with some in the Not-for-Profit sector is preferred
  • High level of critical and logical thinking/reasoning to find solutions or find efficiencies
  • Excellent time management to meet deadlines
  • Strong communication, analytical and management skills
  • Critical thinker
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Collaborative entrepreneurial spirit
  • Team player

Nice to Have Qualities:

  • Experience with Financial Edge NXT
  • Experience with AP automation software
  • Bilingualism is considered a strong asset but not required
