At Khan Academy, our legal team is passionate about the intersection of education technology (EdTech), ethical technology, privacy and legal practice. We use our legal skills to advance Khan Academy's mission, centered on helping learners and their families, tutors, teachers, and schools improve learning outcomes worldwide. We’re seeking a like-minded legal professional interested in joining us for a 12-month fellowship, focusing on the expansion of our international programs.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The fellowship offers a unique opportunity for a seasoned legal professional with a strong background in international transactions and privacy regulation to contribute to a meaningful nonprofit mission. We use three models for our international work: in-country operations in select countries (India, Brazil and Peru); in partnerships with local NGOs and through a volunteer program for content localization. Your expertise will help us navigate the complexities of global privacy, education access and equity and will support us in strengthening these models. Khan Academy is also actively working on making our AI-enabled services (Khanmigo) available internationally. This role provides an opportunity to work in the context of a rapidly changing regulatory landscape for privacy, AI and digital services. THE ROLE

Our Sr. Legal Counsel - International Operations will play a key role in advancing our international reach:

  • Provide transactional support, with an emphasis on international school programs and developing of our services model in Brazil and India.
  • Coordinate with local counsel in various jurisdictions to ensure that our efforts align with local regulations and to obtain transactional advice.
  • Act as the business partner to international teams within Khan Academy, providing first-line support for legal and transactional advice.
  • Support our privacy compliance efforts, with a special focus on international regulations, ensuring our practices are harmonized across borders.
  • Drive the creation and adoption of standardized processes to scale our global programs in a consistent manner.
  • Develop resources such as contract templates, compliance guides, and training materials tailored for international operations.
  • Tackle additional legal matters as they arise, with a global perspective.

This is a remote role reporting to our General Counsel.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 8 or more years of legal practice experience, preferably including in-house experience at a technology company with international operations.
  • strong interest in our mission, and in making a positive difference in the lives of millions of learners, parents, and teachers.Significant experience in managing corporate transactions internationally, with an unwavering focus on detail, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Experience in global data privacy, coupled with a commitment to develop and maintain a deep understanding of privacy regulations relevant to Khan Academy’s operations.
  • Experience researching and analyzing regulatory compliance matters and advising on processes to support ongoing compliance.
  • Strong business judgment: you can analyze, assess and communicate business and legal risks, and develop practical solutions to manage risk.
  • Adept at building strong relationships and working with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage expectations and make decisions about how to prioritize the needs of various international teams
  • Must have a JD or LLM from an accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of at least one US state bar association.

NICE TO HAVES

  • Certification in privacy or data security (CIPP or similar)
  • Prior work in privacy compliance programs aligned to major national and international privacy laws (for example, the California CPRA, E.U. GDPR and similar laws)
  • Experience interpreting and applying regulations applicable to child and student privacy
  • A strong interest in our mission, and in making a positive difference in the lives of millions of learners, parents, and teachers.

At Khan Academy we are committed to fair and equitable compensation practices, the well-being of our employees, and our Khan community. This belief is why we have built out a robust Total Rewards package that includes competitive base salaries, and extensive benefits and perks to support physical, mental, and financial well-being.

The target salary range for this position is $188,000 - $235,000 USD / $235,00 - 293,750 CAN. The pay range for this position is a general guideline only. The salary offered will depend on internal pay equity and the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and job market data. Exceptional performers in this role who make an outsized contribution can make well in excess of this range. Additional incentives are provided as part of the complete total rewards package in addition to comprehensive medical and other benefits.
