About the Investigative Journalism Foundation
The Investigative Journalism Foundation is Canada’s leading non-profit newsroom focused on public interest journalism. We are a new kind of media outlet built around databases on who donates to politicians across Canada, who lobby them, and how the government spends your money.
Launched last year, we’re rapidly growing and proud to have been selected for Fast Forward’s 2024 Accelerator for tech non-profits. We’re also delighted to have won a Digital Publishing Award in the Data Journalism category, Product of the Year from LION Publishers and to have been a finalist for the Institute for Nonprofit News’s Startup Of The Year award and a finalist for LION Publisher's New Business Of The Year.
As a non-profit, non-partisan media outlet, our primary purpose is to serve the public. We do this by publishing in-depth investigative journalism that speaks truth to power. Our databases are also used by other journalists, academics, policymakers and individuals seeking to increase transparency and strengthen Canadian democracy.
We believe in a collaborative model and are proud to partner with leading media outlets to ensure our non-profit journalism reaches as wide an audience as possible. To date, our journalism partners include CBC, The National Post, The Walrus, CTV, The Canadian Press, Capital Daily, The Tyee, Canada’s National Observer and The Narwhal.
About this job
This is a full-time staff job. Our office and most of the IJF’s team are based in Toronto, but we’re happy to hear from candidates based elsewhere in Canada.
The position is a great way to collaborate with some of Canada's top data scientists and investigative journalists. Successful candidates will be excited about working at a mission-driven nonprofit that uses journalism to strengthen Canadian democracy every day.
We are looking for a player-coach who will oversee the Investigative Journalism Foundation’s audience development strategy as a senior leader within the organization, first on their own and then hiring a team around them as it grows.
Not sure you meet all the qualifications listed below? Please apply anyway. We’re looking for talented people who share our passion for making Canada a better place. Experience matters less than a desire to learn and grow. We’re committed to building an inclusive environment.
Requirements:
- Passion about working at a non-profit focused on strengthening democracy through public interest journalism and data.
- Excitement about leading an audience growth strategy focused on ensuring our non-profit journalism reaches as wide an audience as possible.
- Practical knowledge of membership and subscription revenue models and experience with converting audience engagement into paying support.
What you'll do:
- Lead the IJF’s audience development strategy, which is focused on building trust with readers through great journalism and public interest data, converting those readers into email supporters and converting those supporters into paying members.
- Work with the Managing Editor and reporters to ensure the IJF’s reporting reaches the greatest audience possible through social media promotion and search engine optimization.
- Collaborate with IJF partners like the CBC, CTV and National Post to ensure our journalism reaches as many people as possible.
- Work with the Technology Manager to track real-time website traffic and help design tools the tech team is building to capture new readers and convert them into paying supporters.
How to apply:
Please fill out this form: https://theijf.applytojobs.ca/marketing/33722. It will ask for your CV, a cover letter telling us how your skills are a fit for the IJF’s mission, as well as links to three projects you've led of which you’re particularly proud.
The three projects from your portfolio are by far the most important part of your application.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
