The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) seeks a graduate student to work as a summer intern with our Climate Department.
This is a remote internship but candidates will have the option of working from IRAP’s New York City or Washington D.C. office spaces.
Candidates must have their own external funding to apply.
Possible Responsibilities
- Support the Climate team’s research needs in the field of climate displacement law with a particular focus on the nexus of climate and conflict.
- Contribute as needed to the work of other programmatic departments, such as by:
- a. Conducting legal research in support of multi-organizational efforts on climate change.
- b. Drafting and updating legal practitioner guides, analyzing changes in U.S. domestic and international law and newly released government guidance, and creating other materials to assist IRAP staff and legal aid practitioners.
- c. Building coalition with other climate and migration justice-focused organizations to advance department objectives.
Requirements
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Initiative to see projects through and ability to multitask.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Strong interest in climate migration, refugee processing, immigration law, and human rights.
Education
-Must be currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in a field related to law, policy, or international relations.

Internship/Externship-related Requirements
- This internship/externship can be in-person in Washington, DC or New York City, or remote.
- This is a full-time internship and requires a 10-week commitment.
- Must have sufficient external funding (e.g., school funding) to cover a 10-week internship program.
- Must have work authorization in the United States for application for an internship (candidates may apply for an externship regardless of work authorization status).
- This internship/externship doesn’t require in-office availability.
Compensation/School Credit
Candidates must have their own sufficient external funding to apply (e.g., school funding) to cover a 10-week internship program.
Duration
This is a full-time position and requires a 10-week commitment beginning on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 with an onboarding week (May 27-30) in IRAP’s New York office. If you are only able to work part-time (for example, if you are a part-time student), or unable to begin on May 27th please still apply and we will review your application.
