Postdoctoral Fellow in Volcanology and Magmatic Processes

The Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology at ETH Zurich is a world-leading center for research into the fundamental processes that shape our planet. We are excited to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work within the Volcanology and Magmatic Petrology group, led by Prof. Olivier Bachmann.

Project background

We are seeking a highly motivated and independent researcher to advance our understanding of magmatic and volcanic systems.

Job description

  • Develop and lead an independent research program in magmatic petrology, volcanology, and/or geochronology.
  • Publish results in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present findings at international conferences.
  • Contribute to the teaching of BSc and MSc level courses in petrology and volcanology.
  • Actively participate in the intellectual life of the institute and research group.

Profile

  • A recent PhD in Earth Sciences, with a focus on igneous petrology, volcanology, or geochemistry.
  • A demonstrable ability to conduct and publish high-quality research.
  • Strong analytical skills, particularly with in-situ techniques (e.g., EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS).
  • Experience in field work, geochronology (e.g., U-Pb, Ar-Ar) and/or numerical modelling of igneous processes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. German speaking would be an added value.

You will be encouraged to develop and pursue your own research ideas, leveraging the extensive analytical infrastructure at ETH Zurich, which includes state-of-the-art microanalytical facilities (EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, TIMS), geochronology laboratories, and computing clusters.
