Policy & Advocacy Intern, VFAI - Fall 2025

The Policy & Advocacy Intern will support Veterans for American Ideals (VFAI) in advancing legislative and issue-based advocacy central to VFAI’s mission and project goals. The intern will assist with researching policy issues, developing advocacy materials, tracking legislative developments, and supporting congressional outreach to uphold American ideals of democracy, liberty, and human rights from the perspective of military veterans, families, and allies.

How will you make a difference in the Human Rights space through this internship?

Through this work, the intern will gain hands-on experience in legislative research, policy analysis, issue advocacy, and coalition engagement while developing a deeper understanding of how advocacy organizations influence public policy at both national and local levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research on U.S. military, veteran, immigration, and human rights policy issues
  • Draft policy briefs, memos, talking points, and educational materials
  • Monitor and summarize legislative and policy developments
  • Assist in preparation for Congressional outreach meetings and advocacy campaigns
  • Track news and media coverage relevant to VFAI’s priorities
  • Collaborate with the VFAI team and coalition partners on advocacy initiatives
  • Join and report to leadership on substance and action items of joint-organization coalition calls
Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills
  • Interest in and ability to closely follow U.S. government, public policy, or advocacy
  • Ability to analyze legislative and policy documents
  • Familiarity with U.S. immigration and/or military-related policy issues (preferred)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Education: Undergraduate or graduate student - recent graduates will also be considered.
Compensation: Unpaid
Start Date: January 20, 2026
End Date: April 24, 2026
Time Commitment: 15 hours per week
