SUMMARY
We are seeking an Associate Data Coordinator, who is interested in the intersection of data and education to join our Data & Product Operations team. Most of your work will impact the initial crucial phase of our data pipeline: data acquisition. Your work will help ensure GreatSchools provides up-to-date, accurate education data to millions of parents and educators nationwide, helping them make informed decisions about schools and education policies.
In this role, you will gain a deep understanding of the education data landscape at the local, state and national level. We are always looking to acquire fresh datasets that measure educational outcomes, resources, or practices on the school, district, and state level. You’ll make use of previous acquisition methods and timing to predict when and how new data will become available based on the year before.
You will be working in a cross-functional group (we call them “pods”) with representatives from our product, data engineering, web engineering, and data science departments. This position reports directly to the Data & Product Operations Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acquire education data: Search for and download publicly available data from a variety of education agency websites in the US
- CRM Management: Maintain detailed Hubspot CRM records and utilize Hubspot to facilitate communication with state/local education agencies and to track progress on accessing non-public data sources.
- Lead nationwide data acquisition outreach: Build strong relationships with education agencies by identifying appropriate contact methods, creating customized data request messaging and maintaining regular, professional correspondence with education representatives in support of data acquisition efforts.
- Stay ahead of trends: Conduct media monitoring (e.g. actively tracking national and regional education data news coverage) to stay on top of new public education data releases or developments
- Maintain data integrity: Update and maintain the GreatSchools data catalog (in Airtable) to inform data landscape and prioritization, and make improvements to data acquisition processes as necessary
- Evaluate datasets: Perform preliminary evaluations of acquired datasets to ensure GreatSchools is able to utilize and interpret them
- Other duties as assigned: May perform a number of other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent with the general level of the job
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of professional experience OR a strong combination of relevant academic, internship, or volunteer experience in a role that involved written communication with several external clients/partners;
- Previous experience with CRM software, such as Salesforce or HubSpot (we use HubSpot);
- Proficiency in spreadsheet software, such as Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel;
- Commitment to GreatSchools’ mission and values; ability and excitement to work with a diverse group of people.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with external partners;
- Ability to take initiative and work independently; must possess the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously in a remote environment;
- Exceptional organizational skills;
- Ability to collaborate with team members in a remote environment;
- Enjoys solving operational challenges related to data collection, organization, and process optimization;
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
BONUS POINTS
- Previous experience with Airtable, Notion, or similar software
- Familiarity with SQL (or eagerness to learn) to support data analysis and process automation
- Familiarity with Python, R, other scripting languages (or the eagerness to learn) to support data acquisition and ingestion automation initiatives
- Familiarity with US education data sources, metrics, or structures is a plus
LOCATION
- Anywhere in the United States.
- Travel up to 2 to 3 times annually to the San Francisco Bay Area may be required
SALARY & BENEFITS
- Base compensation for this role ranges from $60,000-$70,000; however, compensation is dependent upon candidate location and experience.
