About Us

FreeWorld is a fully remote, tech-enabled, nonprofit organization in the US that helps individuals affected by the justice system obtain high-income careers to end the cycle of recidivism and generational poverty brought on by our country's mass incarceration problem.

Each FreeWorld team member is incredibly passionate about what we do and cares deeply for our program participants (called Free Agents) and our team. All applicants should share our passion for the mission and truly believe that everyone deserves a real second chance!

Serious applicants, please read our FreeWorld Culture FAQ and FreeWorld Core Values before applying.

Our Mission

FreeWorld’s mission is to end recidivism and generational poverty by:

  • Placing returning citizens into high-wage careers at scale.

  • Embracing technology and automation to expand our reach.

  • Developing a self-sustaining revenue model to accelerate our growth.

  • Investing in our team and maintaining a culture of honesty, vulnerability, and trust.

  • Creating systemic change by leveraging our deep layers of graduate data in partnership with the Criminal Justice System to become the Gold Standard for re-entry.

Job Description

FreeWorld is seeking a talented, energetic instructor to teach online classes centered around CDL-A Theory and job readiness to justice-impacted individuals. Instructors report to the Education Manager and are one part of the Programs team, providing direct front-line support to our students.

FreeWorld instructors must be comfortable with technology and will use a combination of Zoom and internal tools to engage with students online. Per FMCSA regulations, CDL-A theory instructors must have a valid CDL-A license and a minimum of two years of verifiable experience as a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) driver or instructor.

Great candidates will thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, constantly innovate to keep instruction fresh and students engaged, and will bring a positive, motivating, and high-energy atmosphere to every class, every time.

What you’ll do (Job Responsibilities)

  • Provide world-class, FMCSA-approved instruction to our Free Agents! The primary curriculum consists of General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brakes, and Texas Special Requirements and is delivered via Zoom classes.

  • Lead multiple classes, study groups, and 1:1 instructions over Zoom. Common Instruction curricula include CDL-A Theory, CDL-A Endorsements, Job Readiness, and other areas as needed.

  • Your standard shift will generally be between the hours of 9 am to 6 pm Pacific Time, Monday - Friday. However, all instructors work one evening shift per week and one Saturday per month.
  • Be entrepreneurial. Learn our processes to understand what we do and why we do it, then work together to contribute to improving the existing curriculum and innovating new engagement opportunities that may improve the experience of our Free Agents.
  • Assist with researching, developing, analyzing, and teaching high-quality curricula.
  • Be the main point of contact for all educational questions from our students and team, providing support through FreeWorld’s customer services channels (including text messages and phone calls).
  • Monitor and track student progress and participation in every class. Report all progress through the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry website.
  • Ensure each student is well-prepared and motivated to succeed.
  • Be dependable, adaptable, and resourceful. Always follow through and follow up!

  • Treat our students (and team members) with respect.

What you’ll have (Required Experience and Qualifications)

  • 2 years of CDL A verifiable experience (preferred if you have all endorsements).

  • Strong organization and project/program management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with diverse individuals and people with criminal histories.
  • High energy and enthusiasm with the passion and ability to help students learn and motivate them to succeed!
  • The ability to teach complex topics using simple, easily understood language
  • Empathy always, especially with students who may have learning disabilities or challenges with technology.
  • Patience and discipline: You will be teaching the same classes regularly and answering the same questions repeatedly. What is common knowledge for you will be new to our students, so we must treat them with excitement and respect as they embark on their CDL learning journey!
  • Tech savvy or demonstrated quick learner of technology

  • Self-starting and flexible with the ability to work autonomously with little oversight and pivot when things change.
  • High-speed cable internet or better with a minimum download speed of 100Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 10Mbps

  • Is incredibly passionate about our mission and believes everyone deserves a legitimate second chance

Bonus Points if… (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Impacted by the criminal justice system (directly or indirectly)

  • Online teaching experience or have worked remotely
  • Experience building curriculum
  • Familiar with Google Suite, Zoom, Slack, Asana, Zendesk, or TPR

  • Worked in a tech-based startup or nonprofit
