What is Duet
Duet is an online philanthropic platform that enables donors to provide meaningful aid to vulnerable families in a more dignified, efficient, and personal way. Families request the exact items they need to rebuild their lives, and donors pay for those items on their behalf. We currently provide support to refugee families in Greece, and are actively expanding to COVID-19 relief in LA as well.
Who is Duet
We are a group of 7 USC students and recent graduates who are building Duet out of the Innovation in Engineering Design for Global Challenges class. We have been operating since March 2019: since then, we have facilitated over $40,000 in donations and built a donor community of over 350 members.
Duet has been featured in Viterbi News and Marshall News.
Duet is currently registered as a nonprofit, and is pending 501(c)(3) status.
The Role
Duet is looking for a self-motivated and collaborative Full-Stack Software Engineering Intern to help build our unique and modern marketplace approach towards effective philanthropy. You will play a central role in an agile nonprofit organization that is serious about using technology for social good.
Our product consists of a donor-facing website, a fully-automated item request/pickup system used by hundreds of refugees halfway across the globe, and a stores portal for store owners in Greece to manage their inventory of requested items.
The expected time commitment is about 15 hours per week for 12 weeks.
You will:
Develop user-friendly web products that enhance the Duet experience for donors, refugees, and store owners alike
Build out the automated backbone that allows the Duet platform to operate at scale
Work on end-to-end features including server-side, database, and front-end components
Contribute to short-term and long-term product discussions, e.g. how to scale Duet to provide aid to hundreds of refugee families, or to expand Duet to additional causes (e.g. LA homelessness and/or COVID-19 relief)
Qualifications:
This position might be a great fit if:
You have prior experience with web-development tools like: React.js (frontend), Node.js (backend), SQL databases, Git — especially in a team environment
You can write clean, readable, production-quality code
You have used platforms like Heroku or AWS to deploy your projects in the real world
Outside of technical proficiency, we are looking for people with:
Strong analytical and communication skills
A strong interest in using technology for social impact causes
Why Duet?
Duet offers an opportunity to improve real lives, solve hard problems, and to make the world a smaller, friendlier place. You will gain firsthand experience with all parts of a modern software stack (a great resume boost!), while being a part of a supportive and engaged team of fellow changemakers who are determined to grow this into a sustainable long-term venture. (We are planning to start fundraising in earnest over the coming months, or as soon as we have our 501(c)(3) certification).
Assuming all goes well, there is also the possibility of extending this internship into a permanent position past Fall 2020. Join us in rebuilding lives, together.
