About our organization:

Democracy Works helps millions of Americans vote by providing reliable, useful voting guidance through the sites, apps and groups they trust.

We’re a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works with election officials across the country, as well as tech platforms like Google and TikTok, nonprofit groups like AARP and DoSomething, academic institutions like Princeton University and University of Florida, and workplaces like Starbucks and Salesforce to help voters whenever and wherever they need it.

Democracy Works is committed to diversity and inclusion in everything we do and aspires to have a team that's representative of the voters we serve.

The impact you’ll make:

As part of the Election Administration team, you will be in charge of outreach to election offices regarding the Voting Information Project, an effort to compile polling place information for all 50 states and DC. Your work will include internal coordination with colleagues, external communication with partners, and project organization to track deliverables for upcoming elections.

You will:

  • With the Director of Election Administration and Government Affairs Manager, translate strategy for election administrator-facing work into outreach plans and priorities.
  • Coordinate and send data requests, delivery, and follow up with state and local election offices for scheduled elections
  • Plan, schedule, and lead outreach calls with all participating and prospective states and key counties
  • Assist in planning and facilitating election administration advisory groups
  • Maintain Salesforce database for state, corporate, nonprofit, and campaign contacts
  • Develop and implement strategy for program’s external communications with election administrators, implementers, and users, including the newsletter, forum, website, and conference presentations
  • Lead efforts to persuade non-participating states and localities to participate in VIP.
  • With the Election Platform Data Team, create and oversee day-to-day project management and timelines to ensure timely coverage of elections.
  • Oversee the timelines, deliverables, and day-to-day work of hand collecting unofficial data
  • Mentor and coach interns and temporary outreach staff

You are:

  • Able to communicate effectively with outside stakeholders.
    • You excel at clear and friendly verbal and written communication in a variety of settings, including phone and video call presence, and email outreach.
    • You are capable of compelling stakeholders to take action using each of these forms of communication.
    • You take pride in translating complex information to a variety of audiences.
  • Able to build strategic relationships and be diligent in following up on conversations and commitments.
  • Comfortable discussing technology, in general—we can teach you the specifics. You’ll be working in an organization of technologists, and you’ll be learning how to talk about the work that we do.
  • Extremely organized and attentive to detail.
  • Able to manage your own time and projects extremely well and accomplish goals independently (while asking for help where appropriate).
  • Able to practice decision-making and judgment in handling surprise issues that come up.
  • Interested in election administration and working with state and local election administrators.

You have experience:

  • Working with external partners or stakeholders.
  • Using your excellent verbal and written communication skills in a professional capacity.
  • Managing complex projects and keeping track of details.
  • Acting as a team leader on highly collaborative teams.

It’s a plus if you have experience:

  • Overseeing the work of others and providing guidance and feedback
  • Working with state and/or local government partners
