Responsibilities

  • Research: The primary responsibility of the post-doctoral researcher will be to conduct
    independent research on the impact of artificial intelligence on global geopolitics. This original research should fit with the goals of AIxGEO, which are to develop critical perspectives on an increasingly hostile and securitised vision of AI, producing high-quality research outputs such as academic journal articles, policy reports, and blogs.
  • Partnerships: You will build new relationships and networks amongst those interested in constructive approaches to geopolitical AI. You will actively engage in developing and maintaining partnerships with relevant stakeholders, including policymakers, international organizations, research institutes, and industry experts. This will involve attending conferences, workshops, and meetings to present research findings, fostering collaborative relationships, and promoting global scientific collaboration in the field, and co-convene strategic dialogues bringing together diverse stakeholders.
  • Monitoring the field: The candidate should keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of AI and geopolitics, monitoring trends, relevant research, and policy debates. This will require a proactive approach to continuously expanding knowledge and understanding of the subject matter.
  • Project management: The Research Associate will assist in project management tasks, including coordinating research activities, managing timelines and deliverables, and supporting grant applications and reporting, as well assist in organising academic workshops and policy dialogues.
  • Prepare research briefings.
  • Collaborative engagement with team members, sharing insights, and participating in regular team meetings and discussions will be essential.
  • Teaching and learning support: May assist in the supervision of student projects; will provide limited supervision/instruction to classes; may assist in the development of student research skills; may plan and deliver seminars relating to research area.

Skillset

  • A PhD (submitted or nearly submitted at the time of application) in a field relevant to the project and to public policy (including Political Science, International Relations, Security Studies, Political Economy, Law, Computer Science or cognate disciplines).
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research in relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated potential (via publications, conference presentations, grants, professional and/or project experience) to develop independent research of a very high standard.
  • Excellent analytical and methodological skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write to a very high standard.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including proficiency in research methods and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of AI technical capabilities and governance questions.
