What you'll be doing:

At Crisis Text Line, the engineering, product, and design teams are commonly referred to as Build. The vision of the team is to:

  • Deliver the most trusted, innovative, and easy-to-use Crisis Care Platform in the industry and drive unprecedented levels of growth for people in need worldwide.
  • Ensure that every user feels a sense of community on our platform, allowing us to build trust, and grow our impact.
  • Allow our volunteers to spend all their time supporting people in need in an environment with few constraints, and minimal time searching for supporting information, resources, or support.
  • Provide a services/API-first architecture based on federated sources of data and infuses predictive insights (ML and otherwise) in every aspect of our Platform and Experience.

As a Principal Cloud Infrastructure Engineer at Crisis Text Line, you will play a pivotal role in our mission by contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of our secure, scalable, and efficient platform. Working closely with our Senior Engineering Manager - Infrastructure, you will help ensure the reliability and performance of our systems while upholding our commitment to data privacy, security, and ethics.

Responsibilities:

  • Solution Architecture: Utilize your expertise in AWS (current cloud provider), GCP or Azure Solution Architecture to design, implement, and optimize a secure and privacy-centric platform that includes Next.js, Go, PHP APIs, GraphQL, and Databricks.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Managers: DevOps and cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize our AWS-based platform.
  • Managing Terraform Ecosystem: Manage the module catalog, develop secure and reusable modules, and train developers to use Terraform wisely.
  • Ensuring Developer Empowerment: Develop easy-to-use modules for developers of all skill levels, provide comprehensive training, and foster a culture of self-sufficient infrastructure provisioning.
  • Continuous improvement: Stay up-to-date with Terraform trends, collaborate with other teams, and document best practices for ongoing optimization of the organization's infrastructure as code approaches.
  • Configuration Management: Proficiency in managing application configuration for multi-tenant platforms, with a preference for experience using AWS AppConfig or LaunchDarkly.
  • Access & Secrets Management: Expertise in implementing robust permissioning and access controls to safeguard configuration data.
  • Stability: Proven ability to ensure scalability and reliability of configuration management in high-traffic environments.
  • Platform Infrastructure Delivery: Oversee the end-to-end platform delivery process, from design to deployment, to ensure reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
  • DevOps Best Practices: Drive the adoption of DevOps best practices, including GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, automated testing, and monitoring.
  • Optimize and Improve: Monitor and troubleshoot system performance, implementing improvements to enhance reliability and scalability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Cloud Solution Architect certifications or completed training (e.g. AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials and/or AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate) GCP or Azure would be a plus.
  • Strong experience with AWS Solution Architecture across Next.js, Go, PHP APIs, GraphQL, Databricks, and AI/ML workloads.
  • Proficiency in infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Solid knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Fargate.
  • Familiarity with data privacy, security, and regulatory frameworks, including ISO 27001, GDPR, etc.
  • Proven experience in implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
  • A commitment to ethical practices, data privacy, and security.

Reliable High-Speed Internet Required: Must have a stable high-speed internet connection to support seamless remote collaboration, virtual meetings, online job tasks, etc.

The full salary range for this position, across all United States geographies, is $146,000 - $205,000 per year. The upper portion of the salary range is typically reserved for existing employees who demonstrate strong performance over time. Starting salary will vary by location, qualifications, and prior experience; during the interview process, candidates will learn the starting salary range applicable for their location. We pay competitively in the tech-forward nonprofit space and offer a robust benefits package.
