CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech organization dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program, www.commonlit.org, that is used by millions of teachers and students worldwide each month. We are a quickly growing team of passionate professionals - many of whom are former teachers. Our team is now over 100 full-time employees spread across ~30 states.
The Opportunity
Under the supervision of the Vice President of Business Operations, the IT Systems Administrator will provide support to ensure efficient daily operation of CommonLit’s network and computer systems. The IT Systems Administrator shares responsibility for project planning and execution, infrastructure and operations, process development, compliance, internal and external audits, and business continuity.
This position requires that applicants be based in the metropolitan Washington, DC region and be willing to travel into CommonLit's D.C. office (located in Eastern Market) to perform duties related to laptop inventory and maintenance once per month or as needed.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manage helpdesk support efforts, making sure all applications, laptops, and related equipment problems are resolved in a timely manner
  • Identify problems; assess severity of the issues and troubleshoot as appropriate
  • Install and update software and hardware
  • Support staff with remote maintenance of devices
  • Oversee account provisioning and deprovisioning for CommonLit employees and contractors as requests come in, as well as during employee on- and off-boarding
  • Oversee IT asset management including the assignment, provisioning, and collection of laptops and other equipment
  • Collaborate with the CTO and VP of Business Operations and larger Engineering and Operations teams to resolve issues and errors as they arise
  • Develop and maintain IT processes, policies, and procedures
  • Assist CTO and VP of Business Operations with IT efforts related to SOC2 compliance (user access audits, endpoint security)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field/experience
  • 2-5 years of experience preferred
  • Previous experience building and maintaining IT infrastructure required
  • Experience overseeing an organization's identity and access management including experience managing user identities and roles and integration with identity providers and single sign-on (SSO) solutions:
  • Proficiency with Okta preferred
  • Experience managing a compliance platform (SecureFrame, Vanta, Drata, etc.) preferred
  • Familiarity with AWS and 3rd party integrations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to define problems, analyze the variables and propose solutions
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter, proactive and objective oriented
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments and deadlines

Physical and Additional Requirements

  • This role involves prolonged periods sitting/ standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • May be required to work after hours in emergencies
Salary: $75,000 - $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience
