Job overview: The Chief of Staff will directly support and partner with the CEO. They will work across multiple levels of Common Sense to drive key organization-wide and external-facing projects and manage the Office of the CEO, including staff. This is a highly visible role that partners with the CEO and our executive leadership team to foster communication across the entire organization, manage relationships with external stakeholders and executives, and lead impactful initiatives.

REPORTS TO: CEO

SALARY: $111,200–$132,050. Full Time, Exempt.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as an advisor and trusted partner to the CEO, helping to manage organizational priorities.
  • Manage the Office of the CEO on a daily basis:
    • Manage a team of support staff.
    • Oversee the CEO's calendar, working closely with the executive assistant to ensure all priorities are met and proactively planned for.
    • Ensure that the CEO is well prepared for meetings and events.
    • Lead and/or coordinate responsibility for drafting the CEO's external communications, and respond on behalf of the CEO to issues that arise, both internally and externally.
    • Develop and manage the strategy for the CEO's travel and public appearances to maximize efficiency and exposure.
  • Cross-functional leadership:
    • Serve as a point of contact and gatekeeper between top management and other stakeholders.
    • Partner with leadership and key staff across Advocacy, Development, Marketing, Communications, and other program teams to help prioritize the CEO's engagements.
    • Effectively leverage the CEO's role and schedule for fundraising and revenue/resource development purposes.
  • External initiatives and engagements:
    • Lead projects of top importance to the CEO or highly visible initiatives driven by the Office of the CEO, particularly at the intersection of government advocacy, media, and tech.
    • Drive projects that span Common Sense and other organizations, requiring cross-functional collaboration and resource allocation.
    • Manage the CEO's media strategy in coordination with the Communications team and others at Common Sense.
  • Manage select consultants or advisors to maximize and elevate the CEO and the organization's work.
Position Requirements

  • Four-year degree required; graduate degree strongly preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in management consulting, public policy/advocacy, external relations, or communications-related roles.
  • Background in government, technology, or education sectors strongly preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills, with an ability to balance high-priority initiatives.
  • Skilled verbal and written communicator. Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience and comfort interacting across levels of an organization, including board members and senior executives.
  • An ability to work with a variety of personality types.
  • Ingenuity and the ability to drive initiatives independently.
  • Demonstrated leadership; management experience preferred.
  • Sound discretion and judgment.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, or any other languages, is a plus.
