Through our schools program, we provide educators with a curriculum that teaches the essential digital citizenship and literacy skills every student needs to succeed. We also work with policymakers, industry leaders, and concerned parents, caregivers, and teachers to improve the media and education landscape for kids, families, and schools.Common Sense's Privacy Program is a coordinated effort to evaluate apps and products, protect child and student privacy, and build in safety and security from the start. The Privacy Program evaluates privacy policies so that families and teachers can make smart choices about the learning tools they use with their children and students, and so that schools and districts can participate in improving the technology used in K–12 classrooms. We are looking for a passionate privacy intern who would like hands-on experience evaluating the privacy practices of popular products while supporting the inner workings of our privacy program. As an intern, you will assist our privacy team in executing team project deliverables while garnering practical privacy and technical experience in a fast-paced national nonprofit environment. This internship requires a general interest in policy and the technical aspects of privacy. We encourage students with policy, education, law, and/or technical backgrounds to apply. LOCATION : San Francisco, CA, or remote REPORTS TO : Privacy Counsel, Privacy Program YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO :
  • Work alongside a cutting-edge product, technical, and legislative team that is bringing greater transparency and accountability to the entire sphere of personal information.
  • Build tangible and marketable privacy skills.
  • Develop writing, research, analytical, and presentation skills.
  • Collaborate in a mission-driven organization.
WHAT YOU'LL DO :
  • Work on the Privacy Evaluation Program ( https://privacy.commonsense.org/ ), a school district-advised effort to improve understanding of the privacy implications of education technology (technology used to support teaching and learning).
  • Read the privacy policies of technology applications, draft blog posts about how to evaluate the privacy protections of software, and meet with educators, product vendors, parents and caregivers, or district staff to provide information on privacy and security best practices.
  • Research, write, and edit articles for publication on our website and other publications.
  • Prepare presentations for educational, legal, academic, and corporate conferences.
WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON YOUR APPLICATION :

  • Demonstrated interest in education, consumer advocacy, law, and social justice issues.
  • Past or current coursework in a related field.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :
  • Ideal start date: June 12, 2023.
  • Ideal end date: August 18, 2023.
  • Hours: ~20 hours/week
  • Interns need to be available to attend weekly educational Lunch & Learns. Lunch & Learns will be every Wednesday from 12 p.m.–1 p.m. (PST).
  • We will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
