We are running a service that connects survivors of sexual assault and abuse with trauma-informed therapists. We’re looking for a trauma-informed therapist based in the USA or Canada to partner with us, delivering remote, short-course therapy to survivors according to your own schedule.

Background

Chayn is an award-winning, open-source collective that leverages technology to empower women against violence and oppression so they can live happier and healthier lives. Chayn started in 2013 to provide survivors of abuse with accurate, diverse and accessible information.

Since our beginnings, 400,000 people have accessed our award-winning work online, generating 1.2 million page views. Up to 70% of our volunteers are survivors of abuse which means not only are our projects user-centred - they are user-led. We are experts in trauma-informed work. We are one of the few feminist technology projects tackling gender-based violence while creating and maintaining openly-licensed products and code. We’re proud to have been profiled by GitHub for this during GitHub Universe 2018 and on GitHub Sponsors. Most of our funding comes from non-profit funding.

About the Bloom project

We have created Bloom: a free, online, trauma support service for survivors of gender-based violence.

Bloom provides a variety of course options designed to inform and empower survivors. By combining learnings from the science and study of trauma (without any pseudoscience!) with tips, tools, and techniques to support healing, Bloom provides space for survivors to recover from trauma. During each course, we offer support via regular messages; scripted course videos; and a one-to-one chat service between participants and facilitators. Bloom is led by a global team of full- and part-time facilitators.

About the role

You will be connected to Bloom users for short-term therapy paid for by us. A specific subset of Bloom users are referred to us by external clients and will subsequently gain access to a platform where they can select one of our therapy-partners. Users will have the opportunity to access up to six therapy sessions. Therapy is currently offered in English, Spanish and Hindi and will soon be offered in French and Portuguese.

If you partner with us, you will be delivering short-term therapy to survivors of gender-based violence across the world at no cost to the survivor.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for an amazing, trauma-informed therapist who is excited about the work we do at Chayn and wants to partner with us!

As you will be working with survivors around the world, global indemnity insurance is required for this partnership. This includes insurance to work with therapy clients in North America.

Because this insurance and accreditation with a regulatory body is a prerequisite for this work, we will ask you to complete a questionnaire before moving forward with the process. This questionnaire will ask for:

  • Your qualification
  • Proof of your accreditation with a regulatory body
  • Details of your clinical supervisor
  • Proof of your insurance cover
  • Details of three references

We require these details in order to carry out due diligence checks and we will only contact references if we move forward with our partnership.

Given the nature of our courses and our audience, we encourage applications from mental health professionals who have either grown up in the Global South (or Majority World) and/or have completed professional training there.

Essential

  • Native-level fluency speaking, writing and delivering therapy in English
  • Experience delivering short-term therapy remotely
  • Professional accreditation in counselling or therapy
  • Expertise in understanding of the needs of survivors of sexual violence and domestic abuse
  • Experience providing trauma-informed therapeutic and somatic healing practices to support survivors of gender-based violence across different cultures
  • Uses Google Calendar or a similar, highly-integrated platform for scheduling

Desirable

  • Fluency speaking, writing and delivering therapy in an additional language to English
  • Experience of working for diverse cultural and geographical audiences
  • Familiarity with Google Drive and Google documents
  • Passion for technology

It’s important that all team members have an understanding of intersectionality and systems of oppression and an affinity with Chayn’s aims and organisational values which can be found here.

Hours and conditions

It is up to you when and where you do your therapy sessions! We ask that therapists have between 4 to 6 sessions (of one hour) available to book in their calendars per week. This is so that therapy users have a selection of times to choose from. We can cap how many sessions are booked with you per week.

Payments will be made in monthly instalments on receipt of an invoice. In the event of a late cancellation or missed appointment (i.e. less than 48-hours notice), Boom therapists will still be compensated at your usual rate. If this happens, therapists will use the time to review and advise on Bloom course content.

It is important to note that we are not a direct employer for the therapy project - we facilitate matching you with survivors for short-term therapy and ensuring you get paid for your work!

Process

To apply, please send the following to team@chayn.co with “Bloom Therapist Partner [USA or Canada-based]” in the subject line:
