We’re looking for a confident professional who is passionate about gender-based violence and mental health to help us record Bloom courses in Portuguese. You will be working alongside other Portuguese-speaking activists to create high-quality videos that provide information and tools for survivors on their healing journey.

Background

Chayn is an award-winning, open-source collective that leverages technology to empower women against violence and oppression so they can live happier and healthier lives. Chayn started in 2013 to provide survivors of abuse with accurate, diverse and accessible information.

Since our beginnings, 400,000 people have accessed our award-winning work online, generating 1.2 million page views. Up to 70% of our volunteers are survivors of abuse which means not only are our projects user-centred - they are user-led. We are experts in trauma-informed work. We are one of the few feminist technology projects tackling gender-based violence while creating and maintaining openly-licensed products and code. We’re proud to have been profiled by GitHub for this during GitHub Universe 2018 and on GitHub Sponsors. Most of our funding comes from non-profit funding.

About the Bloom project

We have created Bloom: a free, online, trauma support service for survivors of gender-based violence.

Bloom provides a variety of course options designed to inform and empower survivors. By combining learnings from the science and study of trauma (without any pseudoscience!) with tips, tools, and techniques to support healing, Bloom provides space for survivors to recover from trauma. During each course, we offer support via regular messages; scripted course videos; and a one-to-one chat service between participants and facilitators. Bloom is led by a global team of full- and part-time facilitators.

About the role

Bloom’s courses were originally written in English and we are now rolling out to offer them in multiple languages, including French, Hindi and Portuguese.

It’s important to us that they be translated and communicated in a way that is accessible, scientifically accurate and intelligible to Portuguese speakers with a variety of national, cultural, and personal backgrounds.

The courses we are offering in Portuguese are:

  • Society, patriarchy, and sexual trauma (6 sessions)
  • Healing from sexual trauma (8 sessions)
  • Dating, boundaries and relationships (8 sessions)

This role will be one of four people presenting our videos by reading the prepared scripts in Portuguese. The role will include:

  • Recording videos for our course content
  • Editing and captioning the course videos in YouTube
  • Quality-checking video descriptions and captions

High-quality recording equipment will be sent on loan to the successful candidate for the duration of the project if they do not already own it.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for individuals with a background in activism, education, violence against women and girls, and/or mental health. You should care about supporting the healing of survivors, and implementing trauma-informed practices within the project.

As your primary responsibility is appearing in our course videos, confidence and ease in front of the camera is essential.

For the editing and captioning work, attention to detail, quick learning pace, and precision are important skills. You should be comfortable working closely with individuals from diverse backgrounds in fast-paced environments. We’re looking for someone adaptable, collaborative and highly detail-oriented.

It’s important that all team members have an understanding of intersectionality and systems of oppression and an affinity with Chayn’s aims and organisational values which can be found here.

Essential

  • The successful candidate must be bilingual, with native-level fluency speaking & writing in Portuguese, and full working proficiency in English
  • Solid understanding of the needs of survivors’ of sexual violence, domestic abuse, and the ecosystem of support
  • Confident appearing in video recordings
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Attention to detail
  • Full availability for the recording schedule (see ‘Hours’)
  • Experience of working with diverse cultural and geographical clients and audiences
  • Commitment to creating diverse, inclusive services

Desirable

  • Experience or exposure to trauma-informed care
  • Experience of working within small, distributed teams
  • Passion for technology

Hours

As we are working to deadlines for this project, we are looking for applicants who are available across the following period:

  • The week commencing 12 September
  • The week commencing 19 September
  • The week commencing 26 September
  • There is the possibility of work also moving into the week commencing 3 October.

We are looking for candidates who can give 10-15 hours of work (with no more than 16 hours per week) across these weeks in September.

In your application, please state the exact dates across this four-week period that you are able to commit to. This is an extremely important part of our application process so we can coordinate calendars and ensure our timelines and schedules are as accurate and as fixed as possible.

This role requires us sending specialist equipment to a provided address at the start of the process. Due to this and the nature of video presenting work, we require the candidate to have a stable, fixed background and strong internet access while recording. This means we are unable to work with presenters across this time period who may be traveling or in unsuitable environments for the purposes of recording.

Fees

We structure payment on a per-session basis. There are 22 sessions to record in total and we need to video presenters for each. We split the work as follows:

VIDEO PRESENTER 1 - £83 per session

  • Records session
  • Edits, uploads and adds timestamps
  • Captions and transcript

VIDEO PRESENTER 2 - £37 per session

  • Records session
  • Checks over video once uploaded

The allocation of the number of sessions you will record, and whether you are video presenter 1 or 2 for each will be decided based on your availability. We usually aim to have 3-4 presenters for each language.

In addition to the main sessions, we pay a flat fee of £150 to all video presenters to record the following short videos together, and edit, upload and caption them:

  • 3 x course intros (15m each)
  • 2 x explainer videos (2m each)

Finally, we pay a flat fee of £50 to cover training and onboarding.

Inclusion

At Chayn, inclusion and accessibility are at the core of our work. We welcome applicants from all walks of life. Given the nature of our courses and our audience, we encourage applications from mental health professionals who grew up in the Global South (or Majority World).

We also encourage applications from people of colour, LGBTQ+ people (we are a trans-inclusive organisation), people with disabilities, and people who have experienced other exclusion or marginalisation. Up to 70% of our team members are survivors of abuse so if you are one too and are thinking to apply, know that you will be in a safe and affirming space.

We have tried to make this recruitment process as accessible as possible, but know that there might be more that we can do, particularly if you have experienced exclusion, disadvantage or discrimination, or if you have particular accessibility needs. We would be happy to provide any further support that you may require - please get in touch with us at [email hidden], and we can think together about how to make this process easier for you.
