Training and Education Manager

The Center for Open Science (COS) is looking for a Training and Education Manager to spearhead the growing initiatives that COS engages in to build awareness and skills in open scholarship through education and training. The Training and Education Manager will be responsible for management, coordination, and development of training and education programs and efforts at COS, working closely with the Director of Programs and Program Manager. They will be responsible for managing and supporting training and education activities across funder related projects, contributing to training delivery and development, leading and managing new training and education initiatives, and engaging research communities that benefit from open science education and training. The Training and Education Manager will work closely with staff on the Programs team and across all departments of COS, including the leadership team and other internal and external stakeholders. They will be responsible for the design, execution, and day-to-day management of complex projects including work plans, risk management, work quality, project team motivation, cross-team coordination, timelines, budgets, project adaptation, and project deliverables.
A successful training and education manager will have a passion and expertise for understanding and communicating about all aspects of open scholarship across the research lifecycle including: preregistration and pre-analysis plans; Registered Reports; data management and sharing plans; open data, materials, and code; open licensing; data security and privacy; open peer review; outcome and result reporting; publication bias; questionable research practices; rigor and reproducibility; open access and preprints; incentives and research culture; behavior change and culture reform.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily management and administration of training programs and initiatives; manage stakeholder engagement and communication; and coordinate training and education efforts across teams
  • Drive and execute training and education activities in funder-related projects and facilitating other cross-team initiatives to meet funder and COS objectives
  • Keep track of training deliverables and Key Performance Indicators and maintain timelines and quality of deliverables
  • Communicate effectively through regular meetings and written documentation to ensure team alignment on the scope of work, key milestones, top risks, and timeline
  • Build competency and capacity in training and education, contribute directly to delivery of existing and new training materials, in collaboration with teams across the organization
  • Provide continuing education to COS staff on latest advances in open scholarship, and ensure all staff have baseline competency in open scholarship to support the mission in their role
  • Lead and manage the development of new training and education curricula and initiatives, in coordination with Director of Programs
  • Identify and coordinate external support in training and education and build collaborations and partnerships with external training groups
  • Develop success metrics and collect evidence of the effectiveness of training
  • Perform needs assessment to evaluate training materials against the needs and goals for programs and projects, and ensure content is coherent and up to date
  • Contribute to identifying new training needs and opportunities and developing sustainability for training and education services
  • Understand the COS Strategic Plan objectives and seeks opportunities to influence or contribute to the use of evidence in identifying potential strategies that contribute to the COS Theory of Change
  • Build community around open science adoption and practice

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong knowledge and experience in all aspects of open scholarship, reproducibility, research data and material sharing, research culture, and the research lifecycle
  • Experience in providing open scholarship training to research communities
  • Ability to translate principles and practices across disciplinary domains and methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and pedagogy
  • Experience with OSF, preregistration, and reproducible workflows a plus
  • Experience with research methodology
  • Demonstrated commitment to transparency, rigor, and reproducibility in research
  • Strong practical experience in project management is highly desirable
  • Highly efficient and task-oriented
  • Time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Attention to detail and very strong documentation and workflow management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and in coordination with a team for advancing shared objectives on a very assertive timeline
  • Ability to prioritize, make decisions, problem-solve, and ask for help

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. degree or demonstrated extensive understanding of the research process
  • 2-3 years experience coordinating, delivering, and developing training and education curriculum
  • Demonstrated experience in project management preferred

Other information:

  • This position will not immediately have direct reports but may in the future.
  • This is largely a sedentary role. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • COS supports flexibility in work scheduling. Individuals who would like to work outside a 9am - 5pm Eastern Time (ET) schedule must work with their managers to establish core hours of availability. Modifications for different time zones will be considered for team collaboration.
  • Occasional travel is possible for this position.

  • 401(k) with employer match. COS offers a matching contribution of 100% up to 3% of pay and another 50% up to 5% of pay (the full match will be 4% if participants elect to defer 5%)
