San Francisco, CA, USA

The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization focused on mitigating societal-scale risks from AI. We work to ensure that AI is developed and deployed safely, aligning its impact with the long-term interests of humanity. This means engaging with policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and the broader public to build awareness and support for measures that can meaningfully reduce AI risk.
CAIS is seeking a skilled content editor to help us develop compelling writing on the societal impacts and risks of artificial intelligence across our online platforms. You’ll work closely with our research and communications teams to shape messaging, structure content, and write compelling copy for a new course and other initiatives aimed at broadening public understanding of AI risks. We want to develop narratives that resonate widely, draw on diverse perspectives, and inspire action across political, cultural, and professional boundaries. This role is ideal for a creative communicator with a strong grasp of AI risks, who can translate complex ideas into engaging, accessible content for a wide range of audiences. You will need to craft messaging that speaks to different audiences, and adapt your style for various platforms and contexts. This is a fast-paced, iterative role where your work will directly inform high-visibility outreach and education campaigns.
We are open to full-time or part-time arrangements. The role is time-limited (3 months), with the possibility of extension.
We have a preference for candidates based in San Francisco, but we are open to remote candidates, as well.
Key Responsibilities
- Propose effective formats and structures for digital content to maximize clarity and engagement.
- Draft copy for websites and other public-facing materials, in close collaboration with research and communications teams.
- Develop learning materials for courses such as slides, quizzes and resource compendia that highlight the broader ecosystem of work on AI risks.
- Conduct quality assurance and ensure accuracy and consistency in tone and messaging.
You might be a good fit if
- Have a solid understanding of AI risks and are motivated by CAIS’ mission to mitigate societal-scale risks from advanced AI.
- Write with exceptional clarity and precision.
- Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and can balance attention to both big-picture messaging strategy and fine-grained copy edits.
- Have familiarity with U.S. politics, culture, and media landscapes.
Bonus
- Have experience in public policy, communications, journalism, or political organizing.
- A track record of crafting messaging for complex, technical, or policy-related issues.
