The Calyx Institute is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic Shipping and Fulfillment Associate to join our Membership Team. This role will be responsible for preparing and shipping membership benefits packages to members, optimizing shipping activities to improve efficiency and eco-friendliness, and representing The Calyx Institute through professional and responsive communication with members. This position will also track inventory, supplies, and costs associated with membership benefits fulfillment, help maintain the membership database, and assist with some administrative tasks. This position reports to the Membership Director and works with the 3-person Membership Team.

This position is an in-office, non-remote role. Shipping and fulfillment takes place in our Brooklyn, NY office. Shipping and fulfillment is primarily focused on wireless hotspots, mobile phones, t-shirts, hats, and stickers sent to our member-donors.

The Calyx Institute is a small but growing US-based nonprofit. We are headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, and have full-time staff working remotely throughout the United States. We also work with international contractors around the globe. We serve over ten thousand members, and support millions of users through various projects such as CalyxOS, SeedVault, and our membership program.

Our programs include digital services to advance privacy and online censorship circumvention, privacy and censorship circumvention infrastructure hosting including Tor relays, a wireless internet hotspot membership program, grant-giving, fiscal sponsorships, the development of a privacy-focused mobile phone operating system based on the Android Open Source Project, and the development of educational materials and events relating to online privacy. This is a full-time, salaried, non-exempt position located in our Brooklyn, NY office. The salary will be $50,000 yearly, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position may involve the opportunity for travel several times a year to conferences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Receiving and arranging incoming deliveries in designated storage areas.
• Packing and shipping outgoing member packages.
• Optimizing shipping and fulfillment operations.
• Updating databases to track memberships and inventory.
• Adhering to state health and safety practices.
• Coordinating with the membership team to resolve shipping-related questions and complaints from our members using Zammad helpdesk ticketing software and over the phone.
• Resolving international shipping issues.

Requirements

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position frequently, while packing and shipping as well as operating a computer.
• The ability to occasionally move about the office to access filing cabinets/office machinery/packing & shipping equipment.
• Ability to ascend/descend ladders as needed to distribute inventory.
• Ability to lift and move packing/shipping equipment and materials up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

• A minimum of one year experience in shipping or logistics is a requirement.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to communicate in spoken and written English.
• A track record demonstrating the ability to process work quickly and efficiently with careful attention to detail.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to take ownership of work responsibilities.
• Interest in learning about privacy and security technology for activists, journalists, and the general public a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

• $50,000, non-exempt.
• Four-day work week (32 hours).
• Medical, Vision and Dental Insurance. Medical premiums are covered 100% and Vision and Dental insurance are covered 99% by Calyx.
