Description

We're looking for dedicated and passionate interns to join our Translation Team for Spring 2025!

We are InReach, a trans-led tech nonprofit building the world’s first open source platform matching LGBTQ+ people facing persecution or discrimination with safe, verified resources. Our Translation Proofreader Interns help to improve the language accessibility of our free platform.

For translation, InReach uses a combination of crowdsourced and automated translations. Unlike most sites which rely exclusively on automated translation (e.g., Google Translate), Crowdin allows real people to verify (and edit as needed) machine-generated translations to ensure accuracy, cultural competence, and inclusivity.

For Spring 2025, the following languages are needed: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, and Ukrainian.

Internship Schedule & Compensation

  • Spring 2025 Internship Dates: Tuesday, January 21st - Friday, April 25, 2025
  • Required Hours Per Week: 10 hours (*interns can select their own hours–Monday through Friday–based on their schedule/time zone; all interns will use InReach's volunteer management system to log their hours for accountability)
  • Note: This internship is remote and unpaid. InReach staff is happy to submit forms on behalf of interns who would like to earn academic credit from their universities for this internship. Please specify what forms are required by your university in your application.
Responsibilities
  • Report to our Resource Coordinator.
  • Complete a comprehensive virtual training program designed to enhance interns' knowledge of global and national LGBTQ+ rights, LGBTQ+ terminology, intersectionality within the diverse LGBTQ+ community, and the double marginalization of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and other LGBTQ+ people facing persecution.
  • Use Crowdin, a third-party translation system, to translate text from English into a second language.
  • Proofread translations done by other volunteer, contract, or external translators. *Note: Interns will strive to achieve a minimum average of 10,000 words (Spanish and French) or 5,000 words (all other languages) proofread per week.
  • “Accept” or “decline” Crowdin machine-produced and human-created translations. Translations you “accept” will appear on the InReach platform.
  • Provide helpful feedback to other volunteer translators when needed.
  • Collaborate with the InReach translation team via Discord when any translation questions arise.
  • Additional ad hoc translation tasks (as needed).
Qualifications
  • Obtained or pursuing a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree.
  • Professional proficiency in English and at least one of the following languages: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, and/or Ukrainian.
  • Reliable access to a computer and internet connection for completing remote tasks.
  • Willing and able to write in gender-inclusive language in both English and a second language (e.g., e/x in Spanish vs. a/o; folx vs. men and women in English).
  • Willing and able to learn how to use Crowdin, POINT (InReach's volunteer management system) and Discord.
  • Passionate about language justice, refugee justice, and LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Available for at least 10 hours per week (Monday - Friday).
  • Comfortable using online communication tools (e.g., G Suite, POINT, Discord, Zoom).
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently in a remote environment.
Sample Internship Benefits

  • Gain experience with Crowdin, an online localization tool.
  • Use your language skills for good!
  • Opportunity to increase resource access in your community by contributing to InReach’s Local Community Reviewer (LCR) program.
  • Enhance your understanding of the NGO/social services sector.
  • Gain practical experience in LGBTQ+ rights, refugee/forced migration, and the human rights sector.
  • Opportunity to receive a letter of reference from InReach upon successful completion of the internship.
