About Us

accesSOS is a startup tech nonprofit on a mission to save lives by making emergency help accessible for all.
The Problem: For any emergency, 911 is our go to phone call, except for the 37 million Americans who cannot hear or speak out loud for help. Unfortunately, about half of 911 call centers do not support text-to-911, and updating all systems to the next generation that accepts text messages could take 5-10 years and $15 billion. Even in areas with text-to-911, pinpointing a texter's location is slow and can be dangerous.
accesSOS Solution: That's where accesSOS comes in. It's a free mobile app that translates texts into 911 calls, instantly shares emergency location and streamlines information to 911. This innovative app is available in multiple languages, making it more inclusive. It not only saves precious time for 911 operators but also provides an accessible, icon-based system that has been a true lifesaver for vulnerable populations. We simultaneously uses our innovation as a platform to build awareness and advocate for the national adoption of text-to-911.

Job Description

In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead the development of our products and work closely with the CEO, users, and stakeholders to deliver the highest quality user experience.
You’ll be at the forefront of innovation in the tech nonprofit world, making access to emergency services available to everyone nationwide.
We're looking for someone who's entrepreneurial, driven, and a natural leader—a creative problem solver, with strong technical skills and enjoys working on end-to-end product development.
This role is perfect for those who thrive in a dynamic environment and don’t mind wearing many hats. To make it clear, we are looking for someone who is very strong technically when it comes to development, but also enjoys the project management and product decision making aspects of engineering as well.
As a Lead Software Engineer, your primary responsibilities include:
Set the technical direction for the team, with a focus on JavaScript and TypeScript.
Develop and maintain high quality, scalable code for our mobile and web applications, primarily written in React and React Native.
Design and implement highly available and performant software systems and infrastructure.
Mentor, teach, and manage other engineers and teams that volunteer and/or work with accesSOS.
Engaging closely with the CEO, users, and external stakeholders to ensure exceptional user experiences.
Managing project timelines and resources efficiently to ensure timely delivery of features and products.
Collaborate on decisions ranging from UI/UX design to backend architecture.
Regularly testing the product, monitoring performance, and implementing enhancements for improved functionality.
Have input on and contribute to the product roadmap and vision, ensuring we deliver the best quality product to our users.
Enhancing existing user interfaces to improve usability and accessibility.
Qualifications:
3+ years of experience building and owning a complete product end-to-end.
3+ years of experience developing cross-platform mobile applications for Android and iOS, specifically with React Native or similar technologies.
Have successfully shipped JavaScript/TypeScript applications to a production environment.
Familiar with various cloud platforms such as AWS and Netlify.
Experience leading and mentoring teams.
Experience with cross-collaboration across an organization.
Self-organized, open-minded, and proactive approach to work.
Be a good human being, collaborative in nature, enjoying teamwork and achieving ambitious goals.
The ideal candidate will also have:
2+ years of product management experience in a tech company, preferably within a startup environment.
Exposure to UI libraries and UX collaboration tools like Figma.
Familiarity with Firebase and Google Analytics.
Vendor negotiation experience.
Ability to bridge design, engineering, user engagement, and brand awareness.
Comfortable working in a startup, semi-structured environment.
If hired full time, accesSOS offers 26 days of paid time off, 6 holidays, a competitive salary and benefits.
We value diversity of experiences and perspectives, and most of our team are people of color with personal experience in underserved communities. Our work has been recognized by Forbes, NBC Nightly News, presented at SXSW, and is funded by Twilio.org, PagerDuty, Google, MIT Solve, and Draper Richards Kaplan.
Please note:
Preference will be given to California residents that live in the San Francisco area or commutable distance. Current colleagues work in a hybrid environment, with remote and office engagement.
It can take us a few days from when you submit your application to invite you to a screening call. We will try to keep transparent communication throughout the process and keep you updated on what steps are next.
Our general process: Technical Assessment (around 1 hour) → Screening Call → Interviews (~3 hours, in person or remote) → Team Meet and Greet (in person or remote) → Reference Checks and Offer!
